Duplicate a project

Copy a project's structure and working canvases into a new project for a recurring launch, client delivery, or onboarding flow.

When a project has a structure worth reusing, duplicate it instead of rebuilding a launch, client delivery, or onboarding flow from scratch. ALLO creates a new project in the same workspace, so you can keep the proven shape of the work and change the details for the next run.

Start from the project menu

  1. Open the project you want to reuse.
  2. Open its More or context menu.
  3. Select Duplicate project.
  4. Read the confirmation, then select Duplicate.

The Duplicate project item is in the project menu with the other project actions.

In education-style workspaces, the same command appears as Duplicate classroom. Its behavior is the same.

The confirmation lists the parts ALLO copies and warns that a large project takes longer to duplicate. After you confirm, ALLO creates the new project with a localized version of Duplicate of {project name}. For example, Q3 partner launch becomes Duplicate of Q3 partner launch in English.

What comes with the duplicate

Part of the projectWhat ALLO copies
Workflow structureProject sections, so the new project starts with the same working stages.
Working canvasesALLO queues the source project's non-archived top-level canvases for copying.
New projectCreated in the same workspace. The person who starts the duplication becomes its owner.
Canvas metadataOwners, tags, and Due dates from each copied canvas.
Discussion contextComments on each copied canvas.

Shape the duplicate for the next run

Use duplication for a workflow that has already earned its structure. A launch project with Planning, Review, and Follow-up sections is a useful starting point for the next launch. The same is true for a repeatable client delivery or onboarding project. Open Organize canvases and sections if you want to reshape that structure after the copy.

If you need a clean starting point rather than an established workflow, Create a project instead. For a repeatable launch, Plan a launch before you update the copy for the next run.

Let the canvas copy finish before you invite people

ALLO creates the new project first, then copies its queued canvases in the background. The new project can appear in Projects while that work is still running.

Behind the scenes, ALLO marks the duplication job complete only after every queued canvas has copied or failed. A finished job therefore does not guarantee that every canvas copied successfully. Do not rely on a visible completion notification. Open the duplicate and check that the sections and canvases you need are present before you invite people or begin new work.

Review access and the copied project

Review the copied project before you treat it as the next live workflow:

  • Check the sections and canvases. Remove old deliverables and add the first canvases for the new run.
  • Review each copied canvas's owners, tags, Due dates, and comments. They can carry context that belonged only to the original project.
  • Set project membership deliberately in Manage project members.
  • Review each canvas's sharing separately with Share a canvas.

A duplicate reuses structure and content, not blanket access. The duplicate's project owner is the person who starts it, while copied canvases can retain their owner metadata. Set project membership deliberately and review each canvas's sharing; do not assume that access to the original project carries over.

When Duplicate project is not in the menu

You must be a member of the source project to duplicate it. ALLO also hides Duplicate project in demo projects, shared projects, archived projects, and workspaces where project duplication is disabled.

If the command is missing, check these in order:

  1. Open the original project rather than a shared project view.
  2. Leave demo content and open a project in your workspace.
  3. Restore the project first if it is archived; archived project menus only offer restore and delete controls.
  4. Ask a project owner to confirm that you are a project member.
  5. Ask a workspace admin whether project duplication is enabled for the workspace.

If the command is available but the duplicate stays incomplete after the background work has had time to run, check the copied project before recreating anything. For access or missing-project problems, use Troubleshoot project and canvas access.
